Visual balance is important in art because it creates equilibrium in the picture; this means the eyes view the whole image rather than just a portion, or a corner of the picture where all the attraction is happening, and ignore the rest. Without balance most pictures are uninteresting. If you were to fold a picture in half and both sides where almost, if not exactly, the same, this is called symmetrical balance. If the picture was fold but it is different from each side, yet when looked upon as a whole there is vertical and/or horizontal balance in it, the picture is asymmetrically balance.
