A light meter measures the amount of light and indicates the camera where is the middle ground. What this those is that it gives light to the object metered and makes everything else darker. In the picture located on top only the computer monitor is light everything else is dark. In contrast, in the bottom picture my partner can be visible and most of all the computer screen is just light without distinguishing what my partner is viewing. It is helpful to know metering because in future circumstances one can decide the amount of light gathered for the picture.
